How does the Northern Ireland MOT differ from England?

Northern Ireland's MOT is operated by the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA), not the DVSA, with government-run test centres, separate fees, a different booking system, and currently no equivalent online history checker. At MOT Checkup our free MOT history check covers Great Britain only — NI records are held separately.

TL;DR

  • DVA runs NI MOTs, not the DVSA
  • All test centres are government-operated
  • No DVSA-style public MOT history search for NI vehicles
  • Fees set independently by the DVA
  • Booking lead times typically 6–8 weeks
  • Certificate is valid across the whole UK

Why NI uses a different system

The DVA was created to run vehicle testing as a devolved service. NI opted to keep test centres government-operated rather than open the inspection role to commercial garages, which is the model used in GB.

Buying a car from NI to GB or vice versa

  1. An MOT issued by either agency is valid across the UK.
  2. If buying an NI vehicle and moving it to GB, you can use the existing DVA MOT until expiry — no need to retest immediately.
  3. History checks are harder for NI vehicles because the DVSA online history doesn't cover them. Ask the seller for paper certificates and DVA records.
  4. If selling an NI car to a GB buyer, providing previous DVA certificates significantly speeds the sale because the buyer can't look it up online.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Northern Ireland MOT the same test as in England?
The inspection items are very similar — same focus on brakes, tyres, lights, structure and emissions — but the test is run by the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) in NI rather than the DVSA in Great Britain. Test centres in NI are government-operated, not independent garages. Booking, fees and certificates are issued by the DVA.
Can I check Northern Ireland MOT history online?
Currently no equivalent of the GOV.UK MOT history service exists for NI vehicles. The DVSA's free history covers Great Britain only. NI MOT records are held by the DVA and accessed via the NI Direct service. This is one of the bigger pain points for buyers and sellers of NI cars on the secondary market.
Are NI MOT fees different from England?
Yes. NI fees are set by the DVA and have historically been a few pounds different from the DVSA's caps. The DVA periodically reviews fees independently. Always check the current DVA fee table on the NI Direct website before booking.
Do I need a UK or NI MOT if I live in NI but drive in GB?
An NI MOT issued by the DVA is valid throughout the UK. Likewise, an MOT issued in Great Britain is valid in Northern Ireland. The certificate is recognised across the whole United Kingdom regardless of which agency issued it.
Why are NI MOTs harder to book?
All NI MOT centres are government-run and there are far fewer of them per head than in Great Britain. Demand consistently outstrips slot supply, particularly in summer. The DVA has periodically extended certificates to relieve backlog. Booking 6–8 weeks ahead is typical.
