What Your Free Van MOT Check Reveals

Working vans are often pushed hard and poorly maintained. Our history check exposes the truth about any commercial vehicle.

Complete MOT Test History

Every recorded test from 2005 — pass/fail, test date, and the station that carried it out. Vans often change hands multiple times; see the full picture regardless of how many owners it has had.

Mileage at Every Test

Commercial vans can accumulate very high mileage. Our mileage timeline lets you verify the odometer reading is honest — and flag any readings that contradict each other.

Advisories & Failure Details

Every advisory and failure item listed with full descriptions. Repeated brake or suspension advisories on a commercial vehicle are a serious warning sign about how the van has been loaded and driven.

Current MOT Validity

Confirm the van holds a valid MOT right now. For sole traders and small businesses buying a used van, an expired MOT means the vehicle cannot legally be driven until it passes a new test.

Pass/Fail Rate Overview

See the van's overall pass rate across its lifetime. Frequent failures reveal a vehicle that has been run on a shoestring budget, with only the minimum work done to scrape through each test.

Recurring Problem Areas

Defects grouped by component — brakes, tyres, bodywork, emissions. A van that keeps failing on the same items has an underlying problem that temporary fixes have not resolved.

Class 4 vs Class 7: Which MOT Does Your Van Need?

The MOT class for a van is determined by its gross vehicle weight (GVW), not its size or appearance.

Class 4 (Up to 3,000 kg GVW)

Small vans like the Ford Transit Connect, VW Caddy, and Vauxhall Combo fall into Class 4 — the same as private cars. The test is identical to a car MOT in terms of the items checked and the testing equipment used.

Class 7 (3,001–3,500 kg GVW)

Larger vans including the Ford Transit, Vauxhall Movano, and Mercedes Sprinter (depending on spec) fall into Class 7. This test includes additional checks appropriate for vehicles that carry heavy loads, including axle weight-related brake testing.

Over 3,500 kg — Different Test

Vehicles above 3,500 kg GVW fall outside the standard MOT system entirely. They require an Annual Vehicle Test (AVT) conducted at a DVSA test station. Our MOT history tool covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg.

Van MOT Check — FAQ

Common questions about van MOT requirements and history checks.

What MOT class does a van fall under?
Van MOT class depends on the gross vehicle weight (GVW). Vans up to 3,000 kg GVW — such as a Ford Transit Connect or VW Caddy — are tested under Class 4, the same class as cars. Vans between 3,001 kg and 3,500 kg GVW — such as a large Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter — fall under Class 7. Class 7 vans have an extended test that includes additional checks on the braking system and payload-related components. Vans over 3,500 kg GVW require a different annual vehicle test (AVT) rather than a standard MOT.
At what age does a van need its first MOT?
The same rule applies to vans as to cars: the first MOT is required when the vehicle reaches three years old. After that, the test must be renewed every year. Commercial vans used for hire or reward may have additional operator licence requirements, but the basic MOT requirement starts at three years regardless of use.
What extra items are checked on a Class 7 van MOT?
A Class 7 van MOT includes all the standard checks (lights, brakes, steering, tyres, emissions, structure) plus additional commercial-vehicle-specific assessments. These include brake efficiency at higher axle loads, load security points, number plate lighting, and the condition of any body modifications such as racking, bulkheads, or tail lifts. Brake performance is tested on a roller brake tester at both unladen and laden weights to verify the braking system can cope with the van's designed payload.
Why should I check a van's MOT history before buying?
Vans are working vehicles and are often driven significantly harder than private cars. High mileage, overloading, and deferred maintenance are common in the commercial vehicle world. An MOT history reveals the cumulative wear — brake failures, tyre defects, suspension issues, structural corrosion — that a seller might not disclose. Our free van MOT check shows every test, every advisory, and every failure item recorded since the vehicle first entered the DVSA system.
Can I check a van's MOT if it has personalised plates?
Yes. Our check works with any valid UK registration number, including personalised or cherished plates. The registration is linked to the vehicle in DVLA records, so the MOT history retrieved will be for the actual van regardless of what plates it currently carries. If a seller has transferred plates frequently, the mileage timeline in the MOT history will still give you a reliable picture of use.
