Mileage Timeline

Odometer readings recorded at each MOT test with a visual chart. Spot mileage clocking and inconsistencies instantly.

Advisories & Failures

Every advisory notice, minor defect, major failure, and dangerous item — categorised and colour-coded by severity.

Mileage Anomaly Detection

Our system automatically flags suspicious odometer drops between tests that may indicate mileage fraud.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about MOT checks and our service.

How do I check my MOT history for free?
Enter your vehicle's registration number in the search box above. MOT Checkup instantly displays your full MOT history including pass/fail results, mileage readings, advisories, and dangerous defects — completely free, no sign-up required.
What information does a free MOT check show?
Our free MOT check shows your vehicle's current MOT status, expiry date, full test history from 2005 onwards, mileage recorded at each test, all advisory notices, failure reasons with MOT manual references, and a mileage consistency analysis to detect potential odometer fraud.
Can I check MOT history with just the registration number?
Yes. UK MOT history is searchable by registration number alone — you do not need the VIN. Enter the reg exactly as it appears on the number plate (e.g., AB12 CDE).
Why should I check MOT history before buying a used car?
MOT history reveals odometer readings at each annual test (the most reliable way to detect mileage clocking), repeated failures on safety-critical components like brakes or suspension, dangerous defects the seller may not disclose, and advisory items that indicate upcoming repair costs. It is one of the most valuable free tools for UK used-car buyers.
What is the difference between an MOT advisory and a failure?
An MOT advisory is a defect noticed during the inspection that is not serious enough to fail the test but may need attention soon. A failure (categorised as Major or Dangerous since May 2018) means the vehicle does not meet the minimum safety standard and must be repaired before the MOT certificate can be issued. Advisories from multiple consecutive tests on the same component suggest the owner has been ignoring the issue.
How far back does MOT history go?
Digital MOT records are available from 2005 onwards for vehicles in England, Scotland, and Wales. Northern Ireland records are available from 2017. Earlier tests were paper-based and are not included in the online database.
Is this the same data as the GOV.UK MOT check?
Yes. MOT Checkup uses official DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) data — the same source as the GOV.UK MOT history service. We present it with additional analysis: mileage anomaly detection, pass rate statistics, component-level defect tracking, and AI-powered insights that the official service does not offer.
When is my MOT due?
Enter your registration number above and we will show you the exact MOT expiry date. New cars do not need an MOT for the first 3 years after registration. After that, an MOT is required annually. You can get your MOT done up to one month before the expiry date without losing any days from your renewal.
