Privacy Policy
Last updated: 18 April 2026
1. Introduction
This privacy policy explains how MOT Checkup ("we", "us", "our"), operated via the website motcheckup.co.uk, collects, uses, stores, and protects your personal data when you use our services. We are committed to complying with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), the Data Protection Act 2018, and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR).
By using our website, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree with any part of this policy, please do not use our services.
2. Data Controller
MOT Checkup is the data controller for the personal data collected through this website. If you have any questions about this privacy policy or how we handle your data, you can contact us at info@motcheckup.co.uk.
3. Data We Collect
We collect different types of data depending on how you interact with our services:
3.1 MOT Lookups
When you perform an MOT check, we process the vehicle registration number you enter. This is used to query the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) MOT history API. We cache the results for up to 24 hours to improve performance and reduce load on the DVSA service. Registration numbers entered for lookups are not linked to your personal identity.
3.2 MOT Reminder Service
If you sign up for MOT reminders, we collect your email address and the registration number(s) you wish to be reminded about. This data is stored securely and used solely for sending you MOT expiry reminders via email. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in each reminder email, after which your data will be deleted within 30 days.
3.3 Account Information (Premium Users)
If you purchase a premium subscription, we collect your name, email address, and payment details. Payment information is processed directly by our payment provider (Stripe) and is never stored on our servers. We receive only a tokenised reference to your payment method and your billing email address.
3.4 Analytics and Usage Data
We use Vercel Analytics and PostHog to understand how visitors use our website. These services collect anonymised usage data including pages visited, time spent on pages, browser type, device type, and approximate geographic location (country level). This data is used to improve our website and is not linked to your personal identity.
3.5 Server Logs
Our hosting provider (Vercel) automatically collects server access logs that may include your IP address, browser user agent, and request timestamps. These logs are retained for a limited period for security and debugging purposes.
4. Legal Basis for Processing
Under the UK GDPR, we process your personal data on the following legal bases:
- Legitimate interest: Processing MOT lookups and caching results to provide our service efficiently.
- Consent: Collecting your email address for MOT reminders. You can withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing.
- Contract: Processing account and payment data to fulfil premium subscriptions.
- Legitimate interest: Collecting anonymised analytics to improve our service.
5. Third-Party Services
We share data with the following third-party services, each of which has their own privacy policy:
- DVSA MOT History API: Vehicle registration numbers are sent to the DVSA to retrieve MOT history data. The DVSA is a UK government agency. Their privacy policy is available at gov.uk.
- Stripe: Payment processing for premium subscriptions. Stripe processes payment card details directly — we never see or store your full card number. Stripe's privacy policy is at stripe.com/gb/privacy.
- Resend: Email delivery for MOT reminders and transactional emails. Resend processes your email address to deliver messages on our behalf. Their privacy policy is at resend.com/legal/privacy-policy.
- Vercel: Website hosting and analytics. Vercel processes server logs and anonymised analytics. Their privacy policy is at vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy.
- PostHog: Product analytics. PostHog collects anonymised usage data to help us understand how our website is used. Their privacy policy is at posthog.com/privacy.
6. Cookies
We use a limited number of cookies and similar technologies:

- Analytics cookies: Used by Vercel Analytics and PostHog to collect anonymised usage data. These help us understand how our website is used and improve the experience.
We do not use advertising cookies or share cookie data with third-party advertisers. You can control cookies through your browser settings. Disabling analytics cookies will not affect the functionality of our website.
7. Data Retention
- MOT lookup cache: Cached MOT results are automatically deleted after 24 hours.
- MOT reminder data: Email addresses and registration numbers for reminders are retained until you unsubscribe, after which they are deleted within 30 days.
- Premium account data: Account information is retained for as long as your subscription is active, plus 12 months after cancellation for tax and accounting purposes.

- Server logs: Retained by Vercel for up to 30 days.

9. Data Security
We take appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your personal data against unauthorised access, loss, or destruction. These measures include encryption of data in transit (TLS/HTTPS), secure database access controls, regular security reviews, and use of reputable third-party service providers who maintain their own security certifications. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. International Data Transfers
Some of our third-party service providers (Vercel, Stripe, Resend, PostHog) may process data outside the UK. Where this occurs, we ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place, such as Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) or the service provider's participation in an approved data transfer framework, to ensure your data receives an equivalent level of protection as required by UK GDPR.
11. Children's Privacy
Our services are not directed at children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe we have inadvertently collected data from a child, please contact us at info@motcheckup.co.uk and we will delete it promptly.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, services, or legal requirements. The "last updated" date at the top of this page indicates when the policy was most recently revised. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of our website after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
13. Complaints
