What Is ULEZ?

The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is an area in London where vehicles must meet strict exhaust emission standards or pay a daily charge. Since 29 August 2023, the ULEZ covers all of Greater London, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (except Christmas Day).

The scheme aims to improve air quality by encouraging the use of cleaner vehicles. Non-compliant cars, motorcycles, and vans are charged £12.50 per day. Non-compliant larger vehicles (lorries, buses, coaches) pay £100 per day under the separate Low Emission Zone (LEZ).

Several other UK cities have introduced similar Clean Air Zones (CAZs) with comparable emission requirements and daily charges for non-compliant vehicles.

ULEZ Compliance Standards

Which vehicles are compliant and which are not.

Petrol Vehicles

Must meet Euro 4 or later. This generally applies to petrol cars registered from around 2006 onwards.

Euro 4, 5, 6 = Compliant

Diesel Vehicles

Euro 6 = Compliant

Electric Vehicles

Fully electric and zero-emission vehicles are always exempt from ULEZ charges and all UK Clean Air Zone charges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about ULEZ and Clean Air Zone compliance.

What is ULEZ and where does it apply?
ULEZ stands for Ultra Low Emission Zone. It operates across all of Greater London, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Vehicles that do not meet the required emission standards are charged £12.50 per day for cars, motorcycles, and vans (up to 3.5 tonnes). Non-compliant lorries, buses, and coaches pay £100 per day.
How do I check if my car is ULEZ compliant?
Enter your vehicle’s registration number in the search box above. We use official DVLA data to check your vehicle’s Euro emission standard and fuel type, then instantly tell you whether it meets ULEZ requirements. Petrol vehicles need Euro 4 or later, and diesel vehicles need Euro 6 or later. Electric vehicles are always exempt.
What Euro standard does my car need to be ULEZ compliant?
Petrol vehicles (including hybrids with a petrol engine) must meet at least Euro 4 — generally cars registered from around 2006 onwards. Diesel vehicles (including diesel hybrids) must meet at least Euro 6 — generally cars registered from September 2015 onwards. Fully electric vehicles are always compliant and exempt from all charges.
What happens if I drive a non-compliant vehicle in the ULEZ?
If your vehicle does not meet the emission standards and you drive within the ULEZ zone, you must pay the daily charge (£12.50 for cars in London). If you do not pay, you will receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of £180, reduced to £90 if paid within 14 days. The charge applies every day you drive in the zone.
Are there other Clean Air Zones in the UK besides London?
Yes. Several UK cities operate Clean Air Zones (CAZs) with similar emission requirements: Birmingham (£8/day), Bristol (£9/day), Bath (£9/day), Bradford (£8/day), and Portsmouth (£10/day). More cities are expected to introduce Clean Air Zones in the coming years. The emission standards are broadly the same — Euro 4 for petrol, Euro 6 for diesel.
Is the ULEZ check free?
Yes. Our ULEZ compliance check is completely free and requires no sign-up. Simply enter your registration number and get an instant result. We use official DVLA data to determine your vehicle’s Euro emission standard and fuel type.
My car is a hybrid — is it ULEZ compliant?
It depends on the type of hybrid and its Euro standard. Petrol hybrids (the most common type) need to meet Euro 4 or later. Diesel hybrids need to meet Euro 6 or later. Plug-in hybrids generally meet these standards. Enter your registration above to check your specific vehicle.
Can I get an exemption from ULEZ?
Certain vehicles are exempt from ULEZ charges, including historic vehicles (manufactured before 1 January 1980 and with a historic tax class), military vehicles, agricultural vehicles, and some disabled tax class vehicles. If you believe your vehicle qualifies for an exemption, check the TfL website for the full list of exempt categories.
