What a DVLA Vehicle Check Returns

Our free check combines DVLA registration data with DVSA MOT records to give you the most complete official picture of any UK vehicle.

Vehicle Specification

Make, model, body style, colour, engine size, fuel type, and year of manufacture — exactly as registered with the DVLA.

Tax Status

Whether the vehicle is currently taxed, the tax expiry date, and whether it is declared SORN. Driving an untaxed vehicle is an offence.

MOT Expiry Date

The current MOT expiry date from the DVSA database. Confirms whether the vehicle is legally roadworthy before you drive or buy.

CO2 Emissions

The vehicle's official CO2 emissions figure in g/km. Relevant for VED band, company car tax, and ULEZ or Clean Air Zone compliance.

Registration Date

The date of first registration in the UK. This determines the VED band, the MOT testing schedule, and the vehicle's true age.

Full MOT History

Every MOT test since 2005 — pass/fail results, advisories, mileage readings, and failure items. Goes beyond what the DVLA alone provides.

When to Run a DVLA Vehicle Check

A DVLA check is useful in several common situations.

Before Buying a Used Car

Confirm the vehicle details match what the seller is claiming. Verify tax and MOT status are current so you are not buying a vehicle with immediate roadworthiness issues.

Checking Your Own Vehicle

Confirm your own vehicle's details are correctly recorded with the DVLA. Discrepancies in colour, engine size, or fuel type can cause issues when renewing tax or insurance.

Before ULEZ or CAZ Entry

Use the CO2 and Euro emissions data returned by a DVLA check to determine whether a vehicle is compliant with ULEZ or Clean Air Zone standards before driving into a charging zone.

DVLA Vehicle Check — FAQ

Common questions about checking vehicle records from the DVLA.

What is a DVLA vehicle check?
A DVLA vehicle check is a search of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency's database for information held against a specific vehicle registration number. It returns official records including the vehicle's make, model, colour, engine size, fuel type, CO2 emissions, tax status, MOT expiry date, and number of previous registered keepers. This data is drawn directly from official government records.
What information does the DVLA hold on a vehicle?
The DVLA's vehicle register holds: the vehicle's make, model, body style, and colour; engine capacity and fuel type; CO2 emissions and Euro emissions standard; date of first registration and year of manufacture; current and historic tax status; MOT expiry date (updated from the DVSA); number of previous registered keepers; and whether the vehicle is declared SORN. The DVLA does not hold MOT test history — that is held by the DVSA.
Is a DVLA vehicle check the same as an MOT check?
No. A DVLA vehicle check returns the information held on the DVLA's licensing database — primarily tax, registration, and vehicle specification data. An MOT check (which our free tool also provides) returns the full test history held by the DVSA, including every pass and fail result, advisory notices, and mileage readings since 2005. Our combined check gives you data from both sources.
Can I find out who owns a car using a DVLA check?
No. The identity of the registered keeper is not publicly available through any online vehicle check. This information is protected under data protection legislation. The DVLA may release keeper details to certain parties (such as parking enforcement companies) under specific legal frameworks, but general members of the public cannot access this through an online enquiry.
How is a DVLA check different from an HPI check?
A DVLA check returns official government records about the vehicle's registration, tax, and specification. An HPI check (and similar paid services) adds data from insurance industry databases — including finance outstanding, write-off markers (Category S/N), stolen vehicle registers, and number plate change history. Our DVLA vehicle check combined with the free DVSA MOT history gives you the official picture at no cost.
