Car Tax Calculator — FAQ

Common questions about how VED is calculated in the UK.

How is car tax (VED) calculated in 2026?
For vehicles registered from April 2017 onwards, VED is calculated in two stages. In the first year, you pay a first-year rate based on CO2 emissions — this can range from £0 for zero-emission vehicles to over £2,000 for the highest emitters. From the second year onwards, most cars pay a flat standard rate, though vehicles with a list price over £40,000 also pay an additional premium rate for five years. Vehicles registered before April 2017 follow an older system based purely on CO2 emissions.
How much is car tax for my specific vehicle?
The easiest way to find your exact VED rate is to enter your registration number above. Our tool retrieves the vehicle's official DVLA record and shows the applicable annual rate. Rates change each April in line with DVSA announcements, so we keep the data current.
Do electric vehicles pay car tax in 2026?
Yes. From April 2025, electric vehicles (EVs) became subject to Vehicle Excise Duty for the first time. New electric cars registered from April 2025 now pay a first-year rate of £10, then the standard flat rate from year two. EVs registered before April 2025 also began paying the standard rate from that date. Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) registered from April 2025 are taxed at their actual CO2 emissions rate.
What is the premium car tax surcharge?
Vehicles with an original list price (including options) exceeding £40,000 are subject to an additional premium rate surcharge on top of the standard annual rate. This surcharge applies for five years from the second year of registration. After five years, the vehicle reverts to the standard rate.
Can I pay car tax monthly?
Yes. DVLA allows you to pay VED in 12 monthly direct debit instalments, a single payment covering 6 months, or a single annual payment. The monthly and 6-monthly options cost slightly more overall than paying annually due to a small surcharge. You can renew and set up payment through the DVLA vehicle tax service.
