What a Registration Number Reveals

A simple number plate lookup opens up a wealth of official data about any UK vehicle.

Vehicle Identity

Confirm the make, model, year, colour, body type, engine capacity, and fuel type. Match these against the seller's description to spot discrepancies.

MOT Test Results

Every MOT test from 2005 — whether it passed or failed, why it failed, and what advisories were given. The most complete picture of mechanical condition available.

Mileage Trail

Odometer readings captured at each annual MOT create an undeniable mileage trail. Compare the seller's claimed mileage against this verified data.

Safety Defects

All advisory, minor, major, and dangerous defects found during MOT inspections. Know exactly what an examiner flagged on this vehicle.

Recurring Problems

Our system analyses defects across all tests to highlight components that fail repeatedly — brakes, suspension, emissions, corrosion — showing chronic issues.

Road-Legal Status

Current MOT validity and expiry date at a glance. If the MOT has expired, the vehicle cannot legally be driven on public roads.

Understanding UK Registration Plates

UK number plates follow a specific format that encodes useful information about the vehicle.

Current format (2001+)

Two letters (area code) + two numbers (age identifier) + three letters (random). For example, AB12 CDE. The two-digit number changes every March and September, telling you the registration year at a glance.

Prefix format (1983-2001)

A letter prefix + up to three numbers + three letters. For example, P123 ABC. The prefix letter indicates the year — P for 1996, R for 1997, and so on.

Suffix format (1963-1983)

Three letters + up to three numbers + a letter suffix. For example, ABC 123D. The suffix letter shows the year of first registration.

Personalised plates

A personalised (private) plate can be any approved combination. Our system handles all formats. The MOT history stays linked to the vehicle even if the plate changes.

Reg Check — FAQ

Common questions about checking a vehicle by registration number.

What can I find out from a registration number?
A UK registration number unlocks a surprising amount of information. Through our free reg check you can find the vehicle's make, model, year of first registration, colour, engine size, fuel type, current MOT status and expiry date, full MOT testing history from 2005, mileage recorded at every annual test, all advisory and failure items, and the overall pass rate. This data comes directly from the DVSA and DVLA.
Is a reg check the same as an HPI check?
No. A reg check using our service provides free MOT history, mileage data, and vehicle details sourced from official government databases. An HPI check (or equivalent from Experian, RAC, etc.) is a paid service that additionally covers outstanding finance, insurance write-off records, stolen vehicle markers, and number plate changes. Our free reg check is ideal for an initial assessment; a paid HPI check adds financial and legal background.
Do I need to enter the registration in a specific format?
No. You can enter the registration with or without spaces, in upper or lower case. Our system automatically formats it. For example, 'ab12cde', 'AB12 CDE', and 'Ab12Cde' will all work. Just make sure the characters are correct.
Can I check a private number plate?
Yes. Private (personalised) number plates are checked in exactly the same way. Enter the plate as it appears on the vehicle. The MOT history and vehicle details are linked to the vehicle, not the plate itself, so a plate transfer does not erase the history.
Why does a reg check show different information to DVLA?
Our reg check combines data from both the DVSA (MOT testing data) and DVLA (vehicle registration data) into a single report. The GOV.UK services separate these into two different tools. We combine them for convenience and add our own analysis — mileage anomaly detection, pass rate calculations, and component-level defect tracking — which neither government service offers.
