Bertram founded MOT Checkup in 2026 with a single goal: make the UK's MOT history dataset useful to the public who pays for it. Around 40 million MOT tests are conducted in the UK every year, and the DVSA publishes the results as open data — but the official tools have always been functional rather than friendly. MOT Checkup surfaces the same data with the analysis layered on top: mileage anomaly detection, recurring-defect tracking and a plain-English summary of what a decade of test results actually means.

Alongside MOT Checkup, Bertram runs Carlytics, an automotive data project that informs much of the underlying methodology used on motcheckup.co.uk. His work focuses on the intersection of public vehicle data, search visibility and consumer protection — specifically, building tools that buyers can use before they hand over money for a used car.

He writes and speaks regularly on UK MOT failure trends, used-car fraud (clocking, cloning, finance scams), the practical limitations of HPI-style checks, and how AI can be used responsibly in vehicle history products without inventing facts.
