Why is the MOT history check free?
MOT history is open data published by the DVSA. The records themselves are not proprietary — anyone with a DVSA API key can access them. We pay the engineering cost of building a fast interface and AI-enriched insights, then keep the core MOT history check free because the data is free at source. Some competitors charge for the same DVSA records — that is a packaging fee, not a data licence.
What do the paid Basic and Premium tiers add?
The free tier covers the DVSA MOT history layer, the mileage chart, the AI reliability score and common faults — everything DVSA itself publishes plus our AI insights on top. Basic (£2.99) adds the DVLA-derived layer: vehicle specs, road tax estimate, insurance group, ULEZ status, recall lookup and a branded PDF. Premium (£3.99) adds the full report plus our AI vehicle Q&A chat — ask any question about the car and get an instant answer grounded in its MOT and DVLA data. The Premium ×2 bundle (£5.99) is two Premium reports on any two plates within 30 days — £3.00 effective per check. We do not currently bundle the licensed HPI-style data layers (finance, stolen, write-off).
Do I need to register or hand over a card for the free check?
No. You enter a UK registration on the home page or on /free-mot-check and the report loads. There is no email gate, no card capture, and no "unlock to view" trick on the free MOT history layer. Card details are only requested when you choose to upgrade to Basic or Premium.
Can I check unlimited cars on the free tier?
Yes. There is no daily or monthly cap on the free MOT history check. Trade buyers, private buyers shortlisting several cars, and sellers preparing listings can run as many free lookups as they need. The paid tiers are charged per registration unlocked.
How does this compare to HPI Check?
HPI Check is £19.99 and includes the licensed finance, write-off and theft data layers. We don't currently bundle those licensed layers — so the two aren't a like-for-like swap.
