Dashboard Warning Lights: Which Ones Fail an MOT

Quick answer

Seven dashboard lamps appear in the MOT record as defined defect items. Six are major defects and fail the test: engine management (MIL), ABS, airbag (SRS), stability control (ESC/ESP), tyre pressure (TPMS) and electronic power steering. The brake fluid warning lamp is recorded as a minor defect — the car passes, which is not the same as the car being safe. Oil pressure, temperature, battery, service, fuel and washer lamps are not assessed at all.

Almost every page about dashboard warning lights tells you what the symbol means. Almost none can tell you what a DVSA tester will actually do about it, because that answer lives in the MOT record rather than in a manufacturer's handbook. This page is built from that record: 5,386,344 UK vehicles whose most recent MOT fell in the twelve months to 2026-04-12, of which 79,692 carried at least one failure-grade defect. Every warning-light verdict below is the tester's own wording, with the inspection-manual section they wrote it against.

How often warning lights really fail an MOT

Warning lights have a reputation as MOT killers. The record is more measured than that. Ranked by how many vehicles were failed for them, this is the whole set:

Vehicles whose latest MOT fell between 2025-04-13 and 2026-04-12 and which carried at least one recorded defect (n = 5,386,344). “Share of failures” is the percentage of the 79,692 vehicles in that group whose latest recorded test was a failure. Only each vehicle's most recent test is held, so a car that failed on a lamp and then passed a retest appears here as a pass — read these as floor figures, not as the annual total. Two numbering schemes appear because the records straddle the 20 May 2018 change to the inspection manual. The brake lamp is in the table for completeness only — it is a minor defect, and the handful of failure-grade entries against it are a rounding-level minority of the 1,747 times it was recorded.

Two things fall out of that table. The first is how lopsided it is. The engine management light (8,614 vehicles) is recorded 2.3 times as often as the next lamp on the list, the abs (anti-lock braking) lamp. If you are guessing which lamp will cost you a test, guess that one.

The second is that warning lamps are not a footnote. Across the 79,692 failed vehicles here they account for 18,128 recorded failure entries — and because these figures count each vehicle's latest test only, and a car that failed on a lamp and then passed its retest reads as a pass, the real annual number is higher than this.

Do not drive on these

A red oil pressure lamp, a red temperature lamp or a red brake lamp with the parking brake released means stop as soon as it is safe and switch the engine off. Not one of the three will fail an MOT — oil pressure and temperature are not assessed at all, and the brake lamp is only ever a minor defect on the certificate — and all three can end the car, or, in the brake case, considerably more than the car. “It only comes on sometimes” is not a reason to keep driving; an intermittent brake warning is a leak that has not finished yet.

The lamps the MOT tester assesses

These seven are the lamps that appear in the MOT record as defined defect items. Each is checked where the system is fitted as original equipment. The tester watches the cluster through the bulb-check sequence and then with the engine running: a lamp that stays on is a defect, and — less obviously — a lamp that never comes on at all is also a defect, because the self-check cannot be verified.

Brake system warning light

Minor defect — passred

A minor defect, not a fail — but the most dangerous lamp on this list to ignore.

Symbol: An exclamation mark inside a circle, in brackets — often with the word BRAKE

With the parking brake released, this lamp means the brake fluid level has dropped or the brake warning circuit has a fault. Brake fluid does not get used up. If the level has fallen, it has gone somewhere — usually a leaking pipe, hose or caliper seal.

Stop driving

Stop somewhere safe and check the fluid reservoir. If it is below the MIN mark, do not drive the car. A leak that has emptied the reservoir enough to trigger the lamp can empty it completely under hard braking, and you will have no brakes. Have it recovered.

Airbag (SRS) warning light

Major defect — FAILred

An MOT fail. The tester records it as a major defect.

Symbol: A seated figure with a large circle in front of them

The supplementary restraint system has logged a fault and has disabled itself. In a crash, one or more airbags — or the seat belt pretensioners — may not fire. The rest of the car drives exactly as normal, which is precisely what makes this lamp easy to ignore.

What to do

The car is safe to drive in the ordinary sense, but it is not safe to crash in. Get it diagnosed before you carry passengers, and before you book the MOT. Never work on an airbag circuit yourself — the modules are pyrotechnic.

ABS warning light

Major defect — FAILamber

An MOT fail on any car that had ABS fitted as standard.

Symbol: The letters ABS inside a circle, inside brackets

The anti-lock braking system has faulted and switched itself off. Your ordinary brakes still work. What you have lost is the ability to steer while braking hard — in an emergency stop the wheels will lock and the car will slide in whatever direction it was already pointing.

What to do

Drive gently, leave much more room than usual, and get it scanned. If the ABS lamp is on together with the red brake lamp, treat it as the red lamp: stop and check the fluid.

Power steering (EPS) warning light

Major defect — FAILamber

An MOT fail. Electronic power steering faults are a major defect.

Symbol: A steering wheel with an exclamation mark beside it

The electronic power steering has detected a fault and has reduced or withdrawn assistance. The steering is still mechanically connected, but it may become very heavy without warning, and on some systems the assistance can cut out mid-corner.

What to do

Slow down and get off fast roads. Steering that goes heavy at 70mph while you are changing lanes is a genuine emergency. Have the car looked at before the next long journey, not after it.

An MOT fail when it stays on. Flashing while you drive is the system working, not a fault.

Symbol: A car with two wavy skid lines behind it

Steady means the electronic stability programme has faulted and is not available. Flashing means it is actively intervening because a wheel is losing grip — that is the system doing its job, and the lamp goes out on its own.

What to do

A steady lamp means the car will not catch a slide for you. Drive as though it has no stability control, because it has none, and be especially careful in the wet. Get it scanned — ESC and ABS share wheel-speed sensors, so one failed sensor often lights both.

Engine management light (EML / MIL)

Major defect — FAILamber

An MOT fail. Steady or flashing, an illuminated MIL is a major defect.

Symbol: An engine-block outline, or the word CHECK

The engine's on-board diagnostics have stored a fault code. The lamp itself says nothing about how serious it is — the same symbol covers a loose fuel cap and a collapsing catalytic converter. Only a code read tells you which.

What to do

Steady amber: get the codes read within the next few days. FLASHING: that is a live misfire dumping raw fuel into the exhaust and it can destroy a catalytic converter in a single journey. Reduce speed and load and stop driving as soon as you safely can.

Tyre pressure warning light (TPMS)

Major defect — FAILamber

An MOT fail on cars first used from 1 January 2012 where TPMS was fitted as standard.

Symbol: A flat-bottomed tyre cross-section with an exclamation mark

Either a tyre is genuinely under-inflated, or a TPMS sensor has failed. A steady lamp usually means pressure; a lamp that flashes for a minute at start-up and then stays on usually means the system itself has faulted.

What to do

Check all four pressures cold against the plate in the door shut or fuel flap, and look for a nail or a bulge while you are there. A tyre that keeps going down is a puncture, and a puncture at motorway speed is a blowout.

Which cars fail on the engine management light most

Because the MOT record is per make and model, the engine management light can be traced to specific cars rather than left as a general warning. Across 10,812 UK make/model records covering 81,961,000 tests, the illuminated MIL appears among the five most common failure items on 621 of them6,398,816 tests, on which it accounts for a sample-weighted 1.35% of tests. These are the models where it bites hardest:

DVSA-derived make/model aggregates, restricted to models with at least 20,000 recorded tests. “MIL fail rate” is the share of that model's tests on which “Engine MIL illuminated indicating a malfunction” was recorded. A model only appears here if the MIL is among its five most common failure items, so a low rate elsewhere is not evidence of absence.

Lamps the MOT does not assess

This half of the list matters more than it looks. Not being an MOT item is a statement about the test, not about the car: the oil pressure lamp is the most destructive warning on the dashboard and no tester will ever look at it.

Oil pressure warning light

Symbol: An oil can with a drip

Oil is no longer reaching the engine's bearings at pressure. This is not a low-oil reminder — it means the oil film that stops metal touching metal has gone.

Stop driving

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch the engine off. Do not drive to the next junction, and do not drive to the garage. An engine run without oil pressure can seize within minutes. Check the level; if it is correct and the lamp stays on when you restart, have the car recovered.

Engine temperature warning light

Not an MOT item.

Symbol: A thermometer sitting in wavy liquid

The coolant has reached a temperature the engine cannot survive for long. Usually a leak, a failed water pump, a stuck thermostat or a blocked radiator.

Stop driving

Pull over, switch off, and leave it at least 30 minutes. Do not open the expansion tank or radiator cap while it is hot — the system is pressurised and the contents will come out as steam. Continuing to drive warps cylinder heads and blows head gaskets.

Battery / charging warning light

Not an MOT item.

Symbol: A battery with + and − terminals

The charging system is not charging — most often a failed alternator or a snapped auxiliary belt. The car is now running off the battery alone and will stop when it is flat.

What to do

Turn off heated screens, heated seats, air conditioning and the stereo, and drive straight to a garage if one is close. If the same belt drives the water pump, expect the temperature lamp next. Do not set off on a long journey.

The lamp itself is not an MOT item — but the filter behind it is inspected, and visible smoke fails the test.

Symbol: A box with dots inside it, usually on diesels only

Soot has built up in the filter beyond the level the car can clear on its own. A lamp that appears after a lot of short cold journeys is usually asking for a sustained run so the filter can regenerate.

What to do

Give it a 20-minute run at sustained motorway speed in a lower gear. If the lamp stays on, or if other lamps join it, stop driving it hard and get it looked at — a blocked filter can put the car into limp mode and eventually damage the turbo.

AdBlue / exhaust fluid warning light

Not one of the assessed lamps.

Symbol: A dispenser nozzle with drips, or the words ADBLUE

The diesel exhaust fluid that feeds the selective catalytic reduction system is running low, or the SCR system has a fault. Manufacturers are required to make a car that runs out refuse to restart, so the warning usually arrives with a countdown of remaining miles.

What to do

Top up with AdBlue before the countdown expires — once it reaches zero the car will start on the current journey and then not start again. If the lamp persists after a proper top-up, the fault is in the system rather than the fluid and needs diagnosing, and on many cars it will eventually light the engine management lamp too, which is an MOT fail.

Glow plug / preheat light

Symbol: A coiled filament, like a curled spring

Steady at start-up on a diesel, it simply means the plugs are warming and you should wait before cranking. Flashing after the engine is running means the engine ECU has logged a fault — on most makes that fault will also light the engine management lamp, which is an MOT fail.

What to do

Steady before start: normal, wait for it to go out. Flashing while running: get the codes read.

Service due / spanner light

Not assessedamber

Not an MOT item. Testers ignore it entirely.

Symbol: A spanner, or the word SERVICE

A mileage or time counter has run out. It is the manufacturer's schedule, not a fault, and nothing has been measured.

What to do

Book the service. It has no bearing on whether you pass the MOT, but brake fluid condition and corrosion are MOT items, and a service is when they get looked at.

Low coolant level light

Not an MOT item.

Symbol: A radiator with wavy lines, or a thermometer with a level marker

The level in the expansion tank has dropped below minimum. This is a different lamp from the red overheating warning and usually appears first.

What to do

Top up cold, then watch it. A sealed cooling system should not lose coolant, so a tank that empties again means a leak or, worse, a head gasket. Do not wait for the red lamp.

Low fuel light

Symbol: A fuel pump

The tank is into its reserve.

What to do

Refuel. Worth knowing: repeatedly running a modern car to empty makes the in-tank fuel pump run hot and shortens its life, and on diesels it can draw sediment through the system.

Low washer fluid light

The lamp is not tested — but washers that do not clear the screen are a fail in their own right.

The washer bottle is low.

What to do

Top it up before the test. The tester operates the washers and wipers, and a screen that is not properly cleared is a separate major defect regardless of what the dashboard says.

Not a fault and not a fail — it means somebody pressed the button.

Traction control has been switched off manually. This is different from the stability control fault lamp, which has no OFF wording.

What to do

Press the button again, or restart the car. If the lamp will not clear, or if the fault-version of the symbol appears instead, treat it as the stability control fault above.

What the tester actually does

There is no separate “warning light test”. The lamps are assessed as part of the sections they belong to — the ABS lamp under brakes, the airbag lamp under seat belts and restraints, the MIL under emissions — which is why the section references in the table above are scattered across the manual rather than grouped together.

The sequence is simple. With the ignition on and the engine not running, the cluster should light up: that is the bulb check, and it proves each lamp can illuminate. With the engine running, the assessed lamps should go out. Anything still lit after that is recorded. A lamp that failed to appear during the bulb check is recorded too, under wording such as “warning lamp does not illuminate” — which is why removing a bulb or taping over the cluster achieves nothing except a different defect line.

That reverse defect is not theoretical. Across the assessed lamps, 3,651 vehicles in our records carry an entry logged because a warning lamp did not illuminate, rather than because it stayed on. Removing a bulb, pulling a fuse or covering the cluster does not remove the defect. It changes which defect gets written down.

Modified cars and swapped clusters

Fitting a cluster from a different model, a digital dash conversion or a retrofitted display does not change what is assessed — the tester looks for the lamps that belong to the systems the car has. A conversion that leaves the airbag or ABS lamp permanently dark is the “does not illuminate” defect above, and one that leaves it permanently lit is the ordinary fail. If a modification has removed a system that was fitted as original equipment, that is a separate problem and a bigger one.

Getting a lamp off before the test

Read the codes first. The cheapest possible mistake is paying for parts that fix a symptom the code never pointed at, and the second cheapest is clearing the code and hoping. Modern emissions diagnostics track readiness monitors, so a car presented with its memory freshly wiped reports an incomplete self-test — the lamp is off and the car can still be refused.

If a repair has genuinely been done, give the car a mixed run of urban and faster driving before the test so those monitors complete. And check the car's history: a free MOT check by registration will tell you whether the same lamp has been logged at previous tests, which turns a vague fault into a documented one you can hand a garage.

Can a car pass an MOT with a warning light on?

Some lights, yes; seven, no. A lamp only fails the MOT if the MOT manual defines it as a defect item — a service reminder or an oil-change light is irrelevant to the test. Six warning lights are major defects and fail the car outright: engine management (MIL), ABS, airbag (SRS), stability control (ESC/ESP), tyre pressure (TPMS) and electronic power steering. Every other warning lamp is rarer, and all of them together are still dwarfed by tyres, suspension and lighting.

Can I just clear the fault code before the MOT?

Clearing the code turns the lamp off, but the car's on-board diagnostics also track readiness monitors — self-tests that have to complete before the system reports a valid result. A car presented with the codes freshly cleared has incomplete monitors, and the tester can refuse it on that basis. If the underlying fault is real, the lamp usually returns within a few miles anyway.

Can a tester fail my car for a light they cannot see?

The tester assesses the lamps that are lit when the engine is running. If a bulb or an LED segment has been removed so a warning lamp cannot illuminate at all, that is itself a defect — several of the entries in our records are the reverse of the usual one: 'warning lamp does not illuminate', logged because the self-check never happened.

Does a service light or an oil-change reminder affect the MOT?

No. A service indicator is a mileage or time counter, not a measurement, and the tester ignores it. That cuts both ways — the oil pressure warning light, which is the single most destructive warning a car can give, is also not an MOT item.

Is the DPF light an MOT fail?

The DPF lamp itself is not one of the assessed warning lamps. The filter is checked physically instead: visible smoke of any colour from a car fitted with a diesel particulate filter is a failure in its own right, and a filter that has been removed or hollowed out is an automatic fail. On most cars a genuinely blocked filter will also light the engine management lamp, which is a fail — so the DPF usually costs you the test through a different door.

Each defect line carries the tester's verbatim reason-for-rejection text, the MOT inspection-manual section reference and the severity assigned. The counts on this page cover 5,386,344 vehicles whose most recent test fell between 2025-04-13 and 2026-04-12.

How this page was built

Every count comes from DVSA MOT history records held as 40.1 million vehicle rows, each carrying that vehicle's most recent test with the verbatim defect text, the inspection-manual section and the severity the tester assigned. Three limitations are worth stating plainly. Only the latest test per vehicle is held, so this is a cross-section of one test each rather than every test ever done. The records straddle the 20 May 2018 change to defect grading, so both the old FAIL/PRS wording and the current DANGEROUS/MAJOR/MINOR wording appear and both are counted. And a lamp's absence from a model's top five failure items is not proof it never happens there — only that something else happened more often.
