Traction Control / ESP Light On: MOT Pass or Fail?

Quick answer

Steady means fail. Flashing means it is working. A stability control (ESC / ESP / DSC) warning lamp that stays lit is recorded as a major defect and the car fails. A lamp that flickers while you drive is the system actively intervening because a wheel is losing grip, and it clears on its own. A separate lamp reading TC OFF is a setting somebody switched, not a fault.

What the system does, and what you lose

Electronic stability control compares where you are pointing the steering wheel with where the car is actually going. When those disagree — the back stepping out, the front washing wide — it brakes individual wheels and cuts engine torque to pull the car back into line, dozens of times a second, before most drivers have registered anything is wrong.

When the lamp is steady, none of that is available. Nothing about ordinary driving changes: the brakes work, the steering works, the car feels completely normal. That is the problem. The system you have lost is the one that only ever announced itself in the moments you were about to have an accident, so its absence is invisible until the moment it would have mattered.

Flashing is not a fault

On almost every car, a brief flicker of the skidding-car symbol while you pull away on a wet roundabout means the system just intervened. It is a status indicator, it goes out by itself, and it is not something a tester records. If you see it flashing regularly on dry roads at modest speeds, that is worth investigating — but the thing to investigate is the tyres and the wheel-speed sensors, not the lamp.

Why it usually arrives with the ABS light

Stability control is not a separate box bolted onto the car. It is built on the anti-lock braking system, using the same four wheel-speed sensors, the same hydraulic modulator and frequently the same control unit, with a steering angle sensor and a yaw sensor added.

The practical consequence is that one cheap failed component takes out both. A wheel-speed sensor with a corroded connector, a damaged reluctor ring on a driveshaft, a wiring loom chafed where it flexes near the suspension — any of those lights the ABS lamp and the ESP lamp together. In the MOT record the two are separate defect lines, and the ABS entry is by far the more common of the pair: 3,807 vehicles failed on the ABS lamp against 1,745 on the stability control lamp. If both are lit, expect both to be written down.

Diagnosing it before the test

This is a codes-first fault. A generic OBD reader often will not see chassis-side codes at all — many read engine modules only — so the scan needs to reach the ABS/ESP control unit. Most independent garages can do this; the useful output is which wheel, and whether the sensor is reading nothing or reading nonsense.

  • One wheel reading zero: usually the sensor, its connector, or the reluctor ring it reads.
  • Intermittent, appears over bumps: almost always wiring, where the loom moves with the suspension.
  • Steering angle sensor code after suspension or steering work: the system needs recalibrating, not replacing.
  • Lamp appeared with a mismatched or wrong-size tyre fitted: different rolling radii confuse the wheel-speed comparison. Fix the tyre first.

If the ABS or stability control lamp has been recorded at a previous test, the fault has a documented history, and a garage quoting against a known recurring fault is a very different conversation from one starting from scratch.

Does a traction control light fail an MOT?

What is the difference between the ESP fault light and the 'TC OFF' light?

The fault lamp is the skidding-car symbol on its own. The 'OFF' lamp is the same symbol with the word OFF beside it, and it means somebody pressed the traction control button — it is a setting, not a defect, and it is not an MOT item. If pressing the button again or restarting the car clears it, it was the setting.

Why are my ABS and ESP lights on together?

Because they share hardware. Stability control is built on top of the ABS: the same wheel-speed sensors, the same hydraulic modulator, often the same control unit. A single failed wheel-speed sensor commonly lights both lamps at once, and the fix for one is the fix for the other. Where both are lit, the tester has two separate failure items to record rather than one.

Can I still drive with the stability control light on?

The car drives and brakes normally, so it is not an emergency in the way a brake or oil pressure lamp is. What you have lost is the system that catches a slide before you notice it starting. Drive it as if it has no stability control, because it has none — leave more margin in the wet, and be conscious that the car will not save a mid-corner lift-off the way it used to.

Is stability control a legal requirement on UK cars?

It has been mandatory on new cars sold in the UK and EU since November 2014, which is why almost every car now presented for an MOT has it. The MOT rule follows the fitment: where the system is present, it has to work.
