What a Car Tax Check Reveals

Comprehensive tax and vehicle information drawn directly from the DVLA — available free in seconds.

Current Tax Status

See instantly whether the vehicle is taxed or untaxed. Buying or driving an untaxed vehicle is illegal — verify before you commit.

Tax Expiry Date

The exact date the current vehicle tax expires. Useful when buying a used car so you know whether you need to renew immediately.

Annual VED Rate

The annual Vehicle Excise Duty rate for the vehicle based on its CO2 emissions, fuel type, and registration date. Know your running costs upfront.

SORN Status

Whether the vehicle has been declared Statutory Off Road — meaning it cannot legally be driven on public roads without first being taxed.

Vehicle Details

Make, model, colour, fuel type, engine size, and year of registration — confirmed against the DVLA record to spot any discrepancies.

MOT Status

The current MOT expiry date alongside the tax status so you can confirm the vehicle is both taxed and has a valid MOT in one check.

Why Check Car Tax Before Buying?

An untaxed vehicle creates immediate legal and financial problems for the new owner.

Avoid Legal Penalties

Driving an untaxed vehicle can result in fines of up to £1,000 plus a surcharge. ANPR cameras enforce this 24 hours a day across the UK road network.

Know Your Running Costs

VED rates vary significantly. A high-emission older diesel can cost over £600 per year to tax. Check the rate before you buy to budget accurately.

Spot SORN Vehicles

A SORN vehicle cannot be driven until it is taxed. Confirming SORN status helps you understand any conditions on the sale and the cost of getting it road-legal.

Check Car Tax — FAQ

Common questions about checking vehicle tax status online.

How do I check car tax using a registration number?
Simply enter the vehicle's UK registration number into the search box above. Our tool queries the DVLA database and instantly returns the current tax status — whether it is taxed, the expiry date, whether it is declared SORN, and the annual VED rate applicable to that vehicle.
Is checking car tax status free?
Yes, completely free. You do not need to create an account or provide any personal details. Just enter the registration number and the tax status is displayed immediately at no cost.
What is Vehicle Excise Duty (VED)?
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), commonly called car tax or road tax, is an annual tax levied on most UK vehicles. The rate depends on the vehicle's CO2 emissions, fuel type, age, and list price. Vehicles registered from April 2017 onwards follow a different VED structure to older vehicles. Electric vehicles were exempt until April 2025, after which they became subject to VED.
What does SORN mean?
SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification. If a vehicle is declared SORN, the owner has officially notified the DVLA that it is not being used on public roads. A SORN vehicle does not need to be taxed but cannot be driven or parked on any public road. If a SORN vehicle is being sold, the new owner must tax it before driving it away.
Can I drive a car with expired tax?
No. Driving or parking a vehicle on a public road without valid car tax is an offence that can result in a fixed penalty of £80 or prosecution, an unlimited fine, and wheel clamping or vehicle seizure. ANPR cameras automatically detect untaxed vehicles. Always check the tax status before driving any vehicle you are considering buying.
