What You Can Find in Your MOT Certificate

Since 2015, MOT records are digital. Here is everything recorded on each MOT certificate and where to find it.

Certificate Number

Each MOT pass generates a unique certificate number recorded in the DVSA system. This number is referenced on insurance documents, vehicle sales paperwork, and DVLA records.

Pass or Fail Result

The official pass or fail outcome of each MOT test. A pass means the vehicle met the minimum legal standard on the day of testing. A fail means it did not — and must be re-tested before driving legally.

Advisory Notices

Items the examiner flagged as not yet failing the test but likely to deteriorate. Advisories appear on the digital certificate and in our MOT history check. Tracking advisories across multiple tests reveals wear trends.

Mileage at Test

The odometer reading recorded when the test was carried out. This mileage is part of the official digital certificate and is used to detect clocking. Our history check displays all recorded mileage readings together.

Test Date and Expiry

The exact date the test was carried out and the date the certificate expires — typically 12 months later. Our check shows both, so you always know how much time is left on the current certificate.

Testing Station Details

The registered name and location of the test centre that carried out the MOT. Useful if you need to contact the garage about a recent test result or raise a concern about the test.

How to Print or Save Your MOT Certificate

There are two main ways to access and print your MOT certificate data.

1. Via check.mot.gov.uk

The DVSA's official service at check.mot.gov.uk lets you look up any vehicle by registration. The results page shows the current and recent MOT details. Use your browser's Print function (Ctrl+P or Cmd+P) to print or save as PDF.

2. Via Our Free MOT History Check

Our MOT history check pulls from the same DVSA data and presents it in a clear, structured format. Enter the registration to view all historical certificates and advisory details. Use your browser's print function to save a copy.

3. Contact the Testing Garage

If you need an official printed copy from the testing station, contact the garage that carried out the test. They can usually provide a printout on request. For older tests, the DVSA can sometimes provide records on written request.

Print MOT Certificate — FAQ

Common questions about accessing and printing MOT certificates.

How do I get a copy of my MOT certificate online?
You can view and print your MOT certificate details through the DVSA's official service at check.mot.gov.uk. Enter your vehicle's registration number to see the most recent MOT result, the certificate number, the test date, the expiry date, and all advisory notices recorded during the test. You can print this page directly from your browser or save it as a PDF. The official data is held by the DVSA and is legally valid as proof of MOT status.
Is a printed MOT certificate valid?
Since 2015, MOT certificates have been issued digitally. Paper certificates are no longer the primary legal record. The DVSA maintains the official digital record of MOT results, which is accessible to police, DVLA, insurance companies, and the public. A printed copy of the DVSA online result is not a replacement for the official digital record — but it is useful for your own records, insurance queries, and vehicle sales paperwork.
What if I have lost my paper MOT certificate?
You do not need to obtain a replacement. Since the digital MOT system was introduced, the paper certificate issued by the garage is not the legal record — the DVSA database is. Your vehicle's MOT status can be verified at any time by entering the registration at check.mot.gov.uk. If you need a copy for a specific purpose such as an insurance claim or a sale, you can print the online result directly.
Can I get a copy of an older MOT certificate?
MOT history from 2005 onwards is available through the DVSA service and through our free MOT history check. Each recorded test includes the certificate number, test date, mileage, result, and advisory or failure items. Full digital records of past tests have been preserved since the system was digitalised. For tests carried out before 2005, paper records would have been held by the testing garage, but these may no longer be available.
Do I need to show my MOT certificate when selling my car?
You are not legally required to provide a paper MOT certificate to a buyer. Any buyer can verify the vehicle's MOT status independently using the registration number at check.mot.gov.uk or our free MOT history check. That said, providing the recent MOT certificate reference and pointing the buyer to the official online record is good practice and helps build confidence. The digital record is the authoritative source.
