Can you check a car's service history online?
The short answer
No. There is no national service-history database in the UK, so nothing can return a car's service record from its registration. Sites selling a "service history check" are selling something else. The closest free substitute is the DVSA MOT record, which shows the date, mileage and written-up defects at every test — and that is enough to catch the biggest lies.

A long list of websites will take money for a "car service history check". The uncomfortable answer is that the thing being searched for does not exist. Britain has no central register of servicing — no equivalent of the MOT database for oil changes, cambelts or brake fluid — and no lawful route by which a website could pull one from a number plate.
That matters because service history is one of the two or three things that most changes what a used car is worth, and it is the easiest part of a car's story to fake.
Why there is no service-history database
The MOT record exists because the MOT is a statutory test. Every test is carried out by a DVSA-authorised tester on approved equipment and the result is written straight into a government database. Servicing is nothing like that. A service is a private transaction between the owner and whoever they choose — a franchised dealer, an independent garage, a mobile mechanic, or the owner themselves. Nobody is obliged to record it anywhere and there is no body that would collect it if they did.
Manufacturers have chipped away at this with digital service records. Several premium brands now log dealer servicing to a manufacturer-held system, and a franchised dealer can print that history for a car in their network. But those systems are per-brand, they are not public, they only capture work done inside the brand's own dealer network, and the manufacturer will generally release the record only to the registered keeper. A car serviced for eight years by a good independent garage shows an empty digital record and a perfect paper one.
So when a site offers a "service history check" against a registration, one of a small number of things is happening: it is selling MOT history under a more appealing name, it is selling a provenance report containing no servicing data at all, or it is capturing your email in exchange for a page telling you to ask the seller.

What the MOT record proves instead
The MOT history is not a service history, but it is the only independent, tamper-resistant, free record of a car's life that exists, and it answers more of the questions you actually care about than most people realise. It shows, for cars tested since 2005, whether each test passed or failed, the mileage recorded on the day, the defects and advisories written up, and where the test was done.
Read as a sequence rather than a list, that gives you four things a stack of invoices cannot. An independent mileage trail, taken by a tester rather than the seller. A usage pattern — consistent annual mileage looks different from a car that sat unused for two years. A maintenance signal: advisories recurring test after test are things the owner was told about and chose not to fix. And a continuity check, because gaps mean the car was off the road, on SORN, or being tested somewhere the record does not reach.
The third of those is the closest thing to a servicing proxy. A car whose advisories appear once and then disappear was being looked after. A car carrying the same corroded brake pipe advisory across four consecutive tests was not.
What our MOT dataset shows about neglect
We hold an aggregated dataset built from anonymised DVSA MOT test records covering 22,344 make/model/registration-year combinations and 83,518,695 individual tests. Of those, 10,812 combinations — covering just under 82 million tests — carry a ranked list of the specific defect items behind their failures.
Ranked by how many tests sit behind them, the items that most often appear among a model's top five are overwhelmingly maintenance items rather than catastrophic mechanical ones. That is the practical argument for using MOT history as a servicing proxy: the things that fail MOTs are precisely the things a service would have caught.
Read the third column carefully. It counts defect items recorded per 100 tests, not the share of tests that failed — a single test can log several items — and it is averaged only across model-years where the item ranks in the top five. Treat it as a ranking of what testers write up most, not as a national failure rate.

How to verify servicing on a car you are buying
Since no lookup exists, verification is manual — but it is not hard, and doing it properly puts you ahead of most private buyers. The point is not to admire a thick folder; it is to check that the folder and the MOT trail describe the same car.
- Ask for invoices, not stamps. A stamp is ink; an invoice has a garage name, date, mileage, VAT number and a parts list.
- Check each invoice's mileage against the nearest MOT reading. They should sit on the same curve.
- Ring the garage on the invoice. Independents keep job records and will usually confirm a job number.
- For a franchised-dealer car, ask the seller to request the manufacturer digital service record — only the keeper can obtain it, so a refusal is informative.
- Match paperwork to advisories: work done should be followed by tests that stop mentioning it.
- Treat a book of stamps with no invoices, all from the same unnamed garage in the same pen, as decoration.
Being straight about what a free check can do

It does not show servicing, because nothing can. It also does not show outstanding finance, insurance write-off records or stolen markers, which live in private industry databases. And a record showing nothing is not the same as a car being clean — it means nothing appeared in the data we can see.
The honest position: the MOT trail is the strongest free evidence available, the seller's invoices are the only real service evidence, and the two have to agree before you believe either.
If a car still has finance on it, the lender can repossess it from you — and you lose both the car and the money.
