If you want to know what spec your car is — or a car you're about to buy — you can find most of the basics free using just the registration. Where the spec data comes from (DVLA vs DVSA)

Two different official bodies hold the data behind a reg check. The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) holds the registration record — engine size, fuel, CO2, colour, body type, weights and tax status. This is the source for the specification fields.

The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) holds the MOT record — test dates, pass and fail results, advisories and the mileage logged at each test. That's separate from the spec, but useful alongside it when you're assessing a car.

A good lookup combines both so you don't have to visit multiple government pages. The spec comes from DVLA; the test and mileage history comes from DVSA. Neither of these free sources includes trim level or manufacturer options.

What a registration check does NOT show

This is the honest part most spec tools gloss over. The DVLA record does not store the trim level or model variant. It will tell you a Volkswagen Golf has a 1.5-litre petrol engine, but not whether it's a base Life or a top R-Line — and that difference can be several thousand pounds in value.

It also won't give you the engine's power output in BHP or kW, the transmission type with certainty, or any factory-fitted options like a panoramic roof, leather, sat-nav or a tow bar. Those details come from the manufacturer's build data, keyed to the car's VIN, not from the registration record.

So if you see a free tool promising BHP, torque and full factory options from just a reg, treat the trim-dependent figures with caution — they are often estimated from the engine code rather than confirmed for that exact car. For anything where money turns on the answer, verify against the V5C, the VIN plate and the seller's documents.

Finally, match everything against the car in front of you and its paperwork. If an advert says R-Line but the badges, wheels and interior don't match, ask the seller to prove it. Free reg data confirms the bones of the car; the trim story needs documents and your own eyes.

Why the spec matters when buying a used car

The spec isn't just curiosity — it drives cost and risk. Engine size and CO2 set the road tax band and affect insurance and fuel costs, so checking them by reg before you commit avoids nasty surprises on running costs.
