Car Battery Problems: Can a Flat Battery Cause an MOT Failure?
A flat battery will obviously prevent your car from starting, which means it will never reach the MOT bay. But the relationship between car battery MOT failure is more nuanced than that: even a battery that starts the engine can cause the car to fail the MOT in ways that are easy to miss if you do not know what to look for.
Does the MOT Test Check the Battery Itself?
No — the MOT test does not include a direct battery health check or load test. The tester will not connect a battery analyser or check cold cranking amps. However, the battery's condition has an indirect but significant effect on several aspects of the test that are checked.
The 12V lead-acid battery (or the 12V auxiliary battery in hybrids and EVs) powers virtually every electronic system in a modern car: lights, instruments, ABS, electronic stability control, the engine management unit, and all dashboard warning lights. When the battery is weak, these systems can behave erratically, and the consequences at MOT time can be costly.
Warning Lights Triggered by a Weak Battery
One of the most common ways a car battery MOT failure occurs is through warning lights. The MOT test requires that no relevant warning light — such as the ABS warning, brake system warning, engine management light (EML), or electronic stability control (ESC) light — is illuminated when it should not be.
A weak battery or one that has recently been disconnected (including for replacement) can cause the following scenarios:
- Engine management light stays on: after a battery replacement or deep discharge, the ECU may store fault codes that trigger the EML. The car needs several complete driving cycles to clear these codes naturally, or they must be cleared with a diagnostic tool.
- ABS/ESC light illuminated: low voltage during start-up can confuse the ABS module into storing a fault. This will cause an automatic MOT failure.
- OBD readiness monitors not set: if a battery has been recently disconnected, the car's OBD-II readiness monitors (used for the emissions test) may show as "incomplete". The MOT tester checks these, and too many incomplete monitors can result in a failure.
How a Battery Affects the Emissions Test
Modern petrol cars are tested using the OBD emissions check, where the tester plugs into the car's diagnostic port and reads the status of emissions-related monitors (catalyst efficiency, oxygen sensor response, evaporative emission system, etc.). These monitors are set by the car completing specific driving cycles.
If a battery has been recently replaced or the car has sat unused for a long period, the monitors may not be set. The DVSA allows a vehicle to have one incomplete readiness monitor for 2006 and later vehicles, and two for pre-2006 vehicles. Any more incomplete monitors and the car fails the emissions portion of the MOT.
The solution is straightforward: after replacing a battery, drive the car for a full week including a mix of short and longer journeys before your MOT appointment. This gives the ECU time to run through all its self-test cycles and set all readiness monitors to "complete".
Signs Your Battery Needs Attention Before the MOT
Check these signs in the week before your test:
- Slow or laboured engine cranking when starting, especially in cold weather.
- Dimming lights when the engine is idling or during heavy electrical load (heated rear window, blower on full).
- Battery warning light on the dashboard — this typically indicates an alternator problem rather than the battery itself, but either way it is an MOT failure if the light stays on.
- Electrical gremlins: randomly resetting clocks, intermittent radio or window issues, or the stop/start system refusing to operate.
A battery load test at a motor factor or garage usually costs nothing and takes less than five minutes. If the battery is more than four years old and showing any of the above symptoms, replacing it before the MOT is a sensible precaution.
What to Do If You Recently Replaced the Battery
If you have replaced the battery within the four weeks before your MOT, do the following before attending the test:
- Drive at least 100 miles across a variety of road types (motorway, town, A-road) to allow readiness monitors to complete.
- Connect an OBD2 reader (widely available for under £20) to check that all readiness monitors show as "ready" and no fault codes are stored.
- If the engine management light is on, have the codes read and cleared professionally if the underlying fault has been resolved.
