Car Emissions Test Explained: How to Pass Your MOT Emissions Check
The emissions portion of the MOT is one of the most misunderstood sections of the annual test, yet it accounts for a significant share of first-time failures. The car emissions test MOT checks that your vehicle is not pumping excessive pollutants into the atmosphere. Fail it and you will not receive a pass certificate, regardless of how well the rest of your car performs. What the Emissions Test Measures
The test differs depending on your engine type. For petrol vehicles, the tester inserts a probe into the exhaust tailpipe and measures three key readings:
- Carbon monoxide (CO) — a toxic gas produced by incomplete combustion. Older pre-catalytic-converter cars (first registered before August 1992) are allowed up to 4.5% CO. Cars registered from August 1992 onwards must pass 0.3% CO at fast idle.
- Hydrocarbons (HC) — unburnt fuel vapour. The limit is 1,200 ppm (parts per million) for pre-cat cars and 200 ppm for catalyst-equipped vehicles.
- Lambda — a measure of the air-to-fuel ratio. The ideal lambda is 1.00, with an acceptable window of 0.97–1.03 for catalyst-equipped vehicles. A reading outside this window suggests a fuelling or sensor problem.
For diesel vehicles, the test is a smoke opacity measurement. The engine is revved hard in neutral several times, and a smoke meter measures how much light is blocked by the exhaust plume. The limit is typically 1.5 m⁻¹ for turbocharged diesels and 2.5 m⁻¹ for naturally aspirated diesels, though manufacturer-specified limits take precedence if stated on a plate in the engine bay.

Why Cars Fail the Emissions Test
Understanding the causes of failure makes it easier to address them before your test date. The most common reasons include:
Faulty Catalytic Converter
The catalytic converter (cat) oxidises CO and HC into less harmful carbon dioxide and water. A cat that has been damaged by overheating, contaminated by oil or coolant leaks, or simply worn out will allow excessive CO and HC to pass through. Cats are expensive to replace, so it is worth confirming the failure is actually the cat and not a contributing fault upstream.
Failed Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor
The oxygen sensor tells the engine management system whether the mixture is rich or lean. A faulty sensor means the engine cannot self-correct, leading to an out-of-range lambda reading. Replacement sensors are relatively affordable, making this one of the more cost-effective repairs before a retest.
Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Issues
Diesel cars manufactured after 2009 typically have a DPF to trap soot particles. A blocked or removed DPF causes dense, visible smoke and an immediate failure. The DVSA has tightened its rules on DPF removal: testers will now fail a car if they observe evidence that the filter has been deleted, even without a smoke meter reading. Avoid short urban journeys in the weeks before your test — longer motorway runs help the DPF regenerate naturally.
Rich Running Condition
An engine running too rich (too much fuel, not enough air) produces high CO and HC readings. Common causes include a leaking fuel injector, a faulty mass airflow (MAF) sensor, or a stuck-open fuel pressure regulator.
Preparing Your Car for the Emissions Check
There are several practical steps you can take in the days leading up to your car emissions test MOT:
- Warm the engine fully before the test. Cold engines produce higher emissions. Drive your car for at least 15 minutes immediately before arriving at the test station, taking in a mix of town and dual-carriageway speeds if possible.
- Use a fuel additive. Products containing polyetheramine (PEA) clean combustion deposits from injectors and intake valves. Add one to a full tank of fuel at least a week before the test.
- Change the engine oil. Old, degraded oil increases blowby gases and can contaminate the cat. A fresh oil change a few hundred miles before the test is always worthwhile.
- Check for engine warning lights. An illuminated engine management light (EML) is an automatic MOT failure under the dangerous/major defect categories introduced in 2018. Use an OBD reader to check for stored fault codes and address them before your appointment.
- Diesels: force a DPF regeneration. A sustained run at above 60 mph for 30–40 minutes helps the DPF burn off accumulated soot.
What Happens If You Fail the Emissions Test
A failure on emissions is recorded as a major defect, meaning the car cannot be driven on public roads in its current condition — except to travel directly to a garage for repair, or back home.
