DPF Problems and MOT Failure: What Diesel Owners Need to Know

The diesel particulate filter — commonly referred to as the DPF — is one of the most talked-about components when it comes to modern diesel vehicles and the MOT test. Since February 2014, a missing or visibly tampered DPF has been an automatic MOT failure. A DPF MOT failure diesel scenario is now one of the most expensive problems a diesel car owner can face, yet it is largely preventable with the right driving habits and maintenance.

What Is a DPF and What Does It Do?

A diesel particulate filter is a device fitted in the exhaust system of diesel vehicles, typically those manufactured from around 2006 onwards to comply with Euro 5 emissions standards. Its job is to trap soot particles produced by diesel combustion before they exit the exhaust pipe.

Over time, the trapped soot builds up inside the filter. To prevent blockage, the DPF periodically undergoes a process called regeneration, where exhaust temperatures are raised high enough to burn off the accumulated soot. This regeneration usually happens automatically during motorway or dual-carriageway driving, where sustained higher speeds allow exhaust temperatures to climb sufficiently.

How Is the DPF Checked at the MOT?

The DPF check at an MOT test involves two elements. The first is a visual inspection: the tester will look under the vehicle to confirm the filter is physically present and has not been removed or bypassed. Any sign of tampering — such as a straight-through pipe where the DPF should be — results in an automatic failure.

The second element is the smoke opacity test. Using a specialised meter inserted into the exhaust, the tester measures how much smoke (in units of m¹) comes from the exhaust during a series of free-revving accelerations. Since February 2014, the smoke opacity limit for diesel cars was tightened significantly, and a blocked DPF almost always causes excessive smoke, triggering a DPF MOT failure.

The current limits are 1.5 m¹ for turbocharged diesels and 2.5 m¹ for naturally aspirated diesel engines. Heavily blocked filters routinely produce readings of 5 m¹ or higher.

Why Do DPFs Become Blocked?

The primary cause of DPF problems is short-journey driving. If a diesel car is used predominantly for journeys under 10 miles — school runs, commutes in urban traffic, short trips to the shops — the engine rarely gets hot enough to trigger passive regeneration. Soot accumulates faster than it burns off, and the filter becomes progressively more blocked.

Other common causes include:

  • Faulty EGR valve: a malfunctioning exhaust gas recirculation valve pushes excess soot into the DPF, accelerating blockage.
  • Wrong engine oil: using standard engine oil instead of low-SAPS (sulphated ash, phosphorus, sulphur) oil leaves ash residues in the DPF that cannot be burned off.
  • Injector problems: leaking or worn injectors introduce raw fuel into the exhaust stream, preventing proper combustion temperatures.
  • Low DPF additive fluid (EOLYS): some vehicles (notably certain PSA Group cars) use a separate additive tank to assist regeneration. When the additive runs out, regeneration becomes inefficient.

Avoiding a DPF-Related MOT Failure

The most effective way to keep your DPF healthy is to give the car regular long runs at motorway speeds. At least one 20–30 minute motorway drive every two weeks is enough for most diesel cars to complete an active regeneration cycle. If the DPF warning light illuminates, do not ignore it: take the car for a prolonged run immediately to allow regeneration to complete.

Before your MOT, it is worth checking for any stored fault codes using an OBD2 reader. A pending DPF warning or high soot load reading gives you time to address the problem before arriving at the test centre. Many garages also offer a DPF cleaning service using chemical cleaning agents injected through the fuel system, which can restore a partially blocked filter without physical removal.

Check your vehicle's previous MOT results to see whether emissions failures or DPF-related advisories have been recorded before.

The Consequences of DPF Removal

Some owners, facing a large DPF replacement bill (often £1,000–£3,000 for a new filter on a mainstream car), choose to have the DPF physically removed and the engine management system remapped to prevent the DPF warning light from illuminating. This is sometimes called a DPF delete.

It is important to understand the consequences clearly:

  • MOT failure: the vehicle will fail the MOT smoke opacity test and the visual inspection. A diesel MOT failure due to DPF removal is certain.
  • Insurance voidance: modifying a vehicle in a way that makes it non-compliant with construction regulations can void your insurance policy.
  • Sale complications: selling a vehicle with a removed DPF without declaring the modification could constitute misrepresentation.
