Keyless Car Theft: How It Works and How to Prevent It

Vehicle theft in the UK has undergone a technological transformation. Where traditional car theft relied on breaking a window and hotwiring an ignition, modern thieves use sophisticated electronic equipment to exploit the keyless entry systems fitted to millions of new and nearly-new cars. Keyless car theft prevention has become a genuine priority for car owners, insurers, and police forces across Britain. Understanding how the attack works is the first step to stopping it.

How Relay Attacks Work

The most common form of keyless car theft is the relay attack. Modern keyless entry keys constantly emit a low-powered radio signal. When this signal is detected by the car, the vehicle unlocks and can be started without pressing any button. Thieves exploit this by using two devices working in tandem:

  • Device 1 is held near the front door of your house. It detects and amplifies the faint signal from your key fob inside the property.
  • Device 2 is held near your car on the driveway. It relays the amplified signal to the vehicle.

The car's system believes the key is in proximity, so it unlocks and can be started. The entire process can take less than 60 seconds. No glass is broken, no alarm is triggered, and no force is used. By the time many owners realise their car is missing, it may already be loaded onto a transporter or have its VIN plates changed in a "chop shop".

Which Cars Are Most at Risk?

Any vehicle with a passive keyless entry (PKE) system is theoretically vulnerable to a relay attack. However, theft patterns in the UK show a clear preference among organised criminal gangs for high-value models with strong secondhand demand or valuable parts. Ford vehicles — particularly the Focus and Fiesta — have historically been among the most stolen, alongside Range Rovers, BMW 3 and 5 Series, Mercedes C and E Class, and Toyota RAV4 models. Thieves target vehicles where there is a ready market for the whole car or its components.

Checking a vehicle's history before you buy is important in this context. A car that has been stolen and recovered may have had its locks, ignition, or VIN plate interfered with. A free car check will flag any vehicle recorded as stolen, written off, or subject to outstanding finance — essential due diligence on any used car purchase.

Effective Keyless Car Theft Prevention Methods

Keyless car theft prevention works best in layers — combining cheap, simple measures with more robust physical and electronic deterrents:

  • Faraday pouch — a signal-blocking pouch (available from around £5–£15) placed over your key fob prevents the key's signal from being detected or amplified. Keep your keys in a Faraday pouch whenever they are at home. Test it: if your car fails to unlock when the pouch is on the key, it is working.
  • Steering wheel lock — a visible physical lock is an effective deterrent. Thieves prefer easy targets; a steering lock adds delay and noise. Models with a visible yellow or red bar are particularly effective at deterring opportunistic theft.
  • Driveway alarm or camera — a motion-activated camera positioned to cover your driveway provides evidence and increases the risk of detection for thieves. Many relay attacks are caught on residential CCTV.
  • OBD port lock — some modern vehicles can be reprogrammed at the OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) port, allowing thieves to pair new keys. An OBD port lock physically prevents access and costs around £20–£30.
  • Disable keyless entry — many modern cars allow you to disable the passive keyless entry feature in the vehicle settings, requiring you to press a button on the fob to unlock. Check your owner's manual or dealer for guidance.
  • Aftermarket tracking device — a professionally installed GPS tracker (Thatcham-approved Category 5 or 6) significantly improves the chances of recovery if a vehicle is stolen, and may reduce your insurance premium.
  • Park defensively — where possible, park with the front of the vehicle close to a wall or another car, making it harder to drive away forwards. Consider parking in a locked garage if available.

What Insurers Expect

Vehicle theft claims related to keyless entry vulnerabilities have prompted some insurers to update their policy terms. A small number of specialist insurers now require certain keyless car theft prevention measures — such as a Thatcham-approved tracker — as a condition of cover for high-risk models. Review your policy documents carefully and speak to your insurer if you are unsure whether your current security arrangements meet their requirements.

Failing to disclose a known security vulnerability, or failing to meet policy security conditions, can result in a claim being reduced or refused. If your car has already been flagged as a high-theft-risk model by your insurer, they may request proof that a tracker has been installed before renewing cover.

What to Do If Your Car Is Stolen

Report the theft to the police immediately and obtain a crime reference number. Contact your insurer as soon as possible — do not delay, as most policies require prompt reporting. If your vehicle has a manufacturer tracking service (such as Land Rover's InControl, BMW ConnectedDrive, or Ford Pass), contact the provider so they can attempt to locate the vehicle using their systems.
