Insurance groups run 1 (cheapest) to 50 (most expensive), set by the Group Rating Panel (ABI and Lloyd's Market Association) and managed by Thatcham Research. Figures shown are representative of a common UK specification and are a guide, not a quote. Last reviewed August 2026.

How to read a Volkswagen insurance group

The group is assigned to a variant, not a nameplate. Thatcham Research assesses each version of each model against more than 125 data points on behalf of the Group Rating Panel — repair cost and repair strategy, new price and trim, 0–60 time, weight and top speed, the fitment and measured performance of autonomous emergency braking, and how the car stands up to a benchmark set of security tests.

That is why two cars wearing the same Volkswagen badge can be several groups apart, and why a figure quoted against a model name — including the ones above — is a shortlisting tool rather than a quote. Your insurance schedule states the group for your exact car; so will your insurer if you ring them.

A letter after the number is the security suffix: E means security exceeds the requirement for that class of car and the group was lowered, D means it fell short and the group was raised, A is the expected standard, P is provisional and U is unacceptable. The full explanation is on the insurance groups hub, along with the Vehicle Risk Rating system now succeeding the 1–50 scale.

Volkswagen insurance groups — FAQ

What insurance group is a Volkswagen?
Volkswagen models in our data span insurance groups 10 to 20 on the ABI scale of 1 to 50. The exact group depends on the specific model, engine, trim and factory options — the table above lists the representative group for each Volkswagen model we hold spec data for. Higher-performance and higher-trim variants of the same model sit above the figure shown, sometimes by a wide margin.
Which Volkswagen is cheapest to insure?
Of the Volkswagen models we hold real group data for, the lowest is the Volkswagen Polo at group 10 (hatchback). Lower groups generally mean lower premiums, but the group is only one input — your age, postcode, licence and claims history, annual mileage and where the car is kept all move the final quote, and for a young driver those can outweigh the group entirely.
Which Volkswagen is most expensive to insure?
In our data the highest-group Volkswagen is the Volkswagen Tiguan at group 20. Performance variants and range-topping trims not listed here will sit higher still, because value, power and repair complexity all push the rating up.
Can the same model be in a different insurance group?
Yes. Engine size, trim level, gearbox and factory options all feed the rating, so a base car and the performance version of the same nameplate can be many groups apart. The figures here are representative of the most common UK specification — always confirm the group for the exact variant you are considering before you rely on it.
How do I find the insurance group for my exact Volkswagen?
Your insurance quote, schedule or renewal notice usually states the group for your exact variant, and your insurer or broker can confirm it in a minute. The rating itself is set by the Group Rating Panel and managed by Thatcham Research on behalf of the ABI. Our free check by registration shows the insurance group where we hold spec data for that model, alongside MOT history, mileage, tax status and estimated running costs.
