Toyota service history: who holds the record

By Bertram Sargla, Founder, MOT CheckupLast updated: August 2026Data sourced from DVSA

The short answer

No site can look up a Toyota service history from a registration, because the UK has no servicing database to look it up in. We do not hold or sell service records. Toyota publishes no named digital service record on its own UK site, so the working route is a dealer look-up against the VIN — details below. Then cross-check it against the free DVSA MOT trail, which we do hold and which is on this page.

Toyota GB does not publish a named consumer digital service record on its UK site. Franchised services are logged against the VIN in Toyota's dealer system, and the practical route to them is a Toyota centre — not a public portal. Be sceptical of any site that gives you a precise start year for this; it is not a figure Toyota publishes.

MyToyota. Toyota's owner account covers servicing and bookings. We could not confirm on a Toyota-owned page exactly how much historic service detail it exposes.

How to actually get it

  1. Ask any Authorised Toyota Centre to look the VIN up in Toyota's system. Toyota's own help centre says head office cannot resolve vehicle-specific technical enquiries because "we need to see the car", so the dealer is the route, not the switchboard.
  2. Toyota UK handles general enquiries through an online contact form rather than a published customer-relations phone line.
  3. For anything a Toyota centre did not do, you are back to invoices from the garage that did it.

Toyota UK help centre (contact form). Check it on Toyota’s own site before you dial — published contact routes change, and this was last checked in August 2026.

What we could not verify

A row of sites will tell you all of this with total confidence. We checked Toyota's own published material and could not, so here is the list rather than a plausible guess. If one of these matters to your purchase, it is a question to put to the dealer directly.

  • The year Toyota's UK dealer network moved to digital service records. Widely asserted as "around 2012" on third-party sites; not published by Toyota.
  • Whether MyToyota displays a full historic service list or only upcoming work.

Toyota Relax makes a franchised stamp worth real money

Toyota's service-activated warranty is renewed free of charge every time the car is serviced at an Authorised Toyota dealer, running "until your next scheduled routine service", and eligible services continue "until your vehicle turns 10 years old or reaches 100,000 miles (whichever comes first)". Toyota also states that "if you sell your vehicle, the remaining warranty transfers to the new owner until it expires". So on a Toyota, a history of independent servicing is not a warranty breach — but it does mean there is no live Relax cover for you to inherit, and the car cannot re-enter the scheme except by going back to a Toyota centre. Price that in.

What the MOT trail shows about a Toyota

This is not a service history and cannot be turned into one — the MOT record says nothing about oil changes, cambelts or brake fluid. What it is, is the one independent record of the car’s life that the seller has never been able to touch. Two things in it are real evidence about maintenance: the mileage the invoices have to agree with, and what testers keep writing up.

513,171

Toyota vehicles in our DVSA MOT data with a test in the active window

51.6%

had at least one defect or advisory at their latest test — close to the 31-make average of 53.3%

6,355

median miles a year over the car’s life — 746 below the 31-make median of 7,101

The mileage spread is the number to take to a viewing. Half of all Toyota vehicles in our data average between 4,440 and 9,044 miles a year across their whole life. A car well outside that band is not automatically suspect — but it should match the story the seller and the invoices tell, and a service book whose intervals imply a very different annual mileage from the odometer is the discrepancy you came to find.

Source: MOT Checkup analysis of DVSA MOT history records — advisories recorded at the most recent test of 513,171 Toyota vehicles, active window to 2026-04-12. Counts structured DVSA reason-for-rejection items only; free-text tester notes are excluded because they do not aggregate. Position words such as “nearside front” are stripped so the same defect groups as one item. Contains public sector information obtained under our DVSA-approved MOT History API key; DVSA publishes no data licence for that product.

Read that list as a checklist rather than a verdict. Every item on it is something a service should have caught before a tester saw it, so when you look at a specific Toyota’s MOT history, the question is not whether these appear — they appear on most cars — but whether they appear and then stop. An advisory that is written up at three consecutive tests is a fault the owner was told about three times and left alone, and it is telling you more about how the car was looked after than the folder is.

Across all 31 makes we cover, 53.3% of latest tests logged at least one item, so treat Toyota's 51.6% as a brand-level comparison and nothing more. It says nothing about the particular car you are looking at, and brands whose fleets are younger and less heavily used will read lower for reasons that have nothing to do with servicing. For the individual car, run its registration.

Checked in August 2026. Manufacturer arrangements change; if you find something here is out of date, the sources above are the primary record and they win.

If a car still has finance on it, the lender can repossess it from you — and you lose both the car and the money.

Toyota service history — common questions

Can I check a Toyota service history by registration?
No. There is no UK database of vehicle servicing, so no site can return a Toyota's service history from its number plate — ours included. We do not hold or sell service records. Toyota publishes no named digital service record, so the route is a dealer look-up against the VIN. What is free and instant is the DVSA MOT history, which shows every test, mileage reading, defect and advisory.
Who holds the service records for a used Toyota?
Toyota GB does not publish a named consumer digital service record on its UK site. Franchised services are logged against the VIN in Toyota's dealer system, and the practical route to them is a Toyota centre — not a public portal. Be sceptical of any site that gives you a precise start year for this; it is not a figure Toyota publishes. Anything done outside that network sits with the garage that did it, on its own invoices — so a complete history is assembled from both.
Can a Toyota owner see the service history themselves?
MyToyota: Toyota's owner account covers servicing and bookings. We could not confirm on a Toyota-owned page exactly how much historic service detail it exposes. That is worth knowing before a viewing, because it means you can ask the seller to open it in front of you rather than take their word for it.
Does the MOT history prove a Toyota was serviced?
No. The MOT record contains no servicing data at all. What it does give you for a Toyota is an independent mileage trail every invoice has to sit on, and an advisory pattern showing whether faults were fixed or carried. Across our data, 51.6% of Toyota cars had at least one defect or advisory recorded at their most recent test, close to the 31-make average of 53.3%.
What mileage is normal for a Toyota?
Over 455,630 Toyota vehicles in our DVSA MOT data, the middle half average between 4,440 and 9,044 miles a year across their whole life, with a median of 6,355. That is lifetime average annual mileage, not distance in the last year — use it to sanity-check whether the odometer and the service intervals in the folder tell the same story.
Does servicing a Toyota at an independent garage cause problems?
Not legally. The Competition Act 1998 (Motor Vehicle Agreements Block Exemption) Order 2023, in force from 1 June 2023, preserves independent repairers' access to technical information, tools and parts. The practical issue is documentation: independent work may not appear in the manufacturer's record, so the invoices become the only evidence it happened. Keep them.
